Most patients we see do not know that there were different types of flu shots. With all the medical jargon involved, getting a clear idea of what exactly is the Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine can be understandably difficult. Our aim is to translate that information into simpler terms for our patients to understand what it is and why we only offer this “better more comprehensive” version of the flu shot.
The quadrivalent flu vaccine was created to protect against four different flu viruses- two influenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses. The traditional trivalent influenza vaccines (we do not offer this) only protects against two influenza A viruses and one influenza B virus. This meant the vaccine does not protect against the group of B viruses which were excluded. Adding another B virus to the vaccine gives much needed protection against circulating flu viruses. Research has indicated this addition could prevent as many as 485 deaths a year.
Doctors have not totally disregarded the trivalent version and most just insist that their patients get some form of the vaccine. Different flu vaccines are approved for use in different groups of people. Factors to consider for a person’s suitability for vaccination includes a person’s age, health and any allergic reactions to flu vaccine. The standard-dose quadrivalent nasal spray is approved for healthy people two to forty-nine years old and is more popular among children. The nasal spray is not recommended for pregnant women who should take the traditional shot instead.
The quadrivalent flu vaccine is just as safe as the traditional trivalent version. The main difference is the added protection. Quadrivalent flu vaccines are usually more expensive than the trivalent vaccines but not by much and it is worth doing to provide another layer of protection.
